In the heart of Dakar, Senegal, where the rhythms of life are shaped by tradition, family, and sport, a young boy named Mouhamed Gueye once dreamed not of basketball, but of soccer glory. Born on November 9, 2002, Gueye grew up as the youngest of four siblings in a family deeply rooted in athletics — including cousins who played for the Senegalese national basketball team and professionally in Europe.
But it was his towering frame that redirected his journey. With encouragement from his mother, and inspiration from watching his older brother play, Mouhamed picked up a basketball. That decision would change his life forever.
By age 16, Mouhamed’s potential had caught the eye of his personal coach, Mamadou Cisse, who connected him with Philippe Doherty, the director of Prolific Prep Academy in Napa, California. Mouhamed took a leap of faith, moving thousands of miles from home to pursue a dream he was just beginning to understand.
He arrived in Napa not as a polished prospect, but as a raw, determined talent — one who had never played organized basketball. He quickly adapted, working tirelessly to improve his skills while adjusting to a new culture. He enrolled at Napa Christian and lived with a local host family — Robert and Heather Nations and their children — who became his American family. Even after moving on to college, Mouhamed returned to their home during breaks, a testament to the deep bond they share.
During his time at Prolific Prep, Mouhamed blossomed into a four-star recruit and one of the top 50 high school players in the country. A standout in both the classroom and on the court, he completed his academic requirements early and reclassified to the Class of 2021. Rather than join a blue-blood program, he made a bold choice — committing to Washington State University.
As a freshman with the Cougars in 2021–22, Gueye averaged 7.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 0.5 assists per game, earning Pac-12 All-Freshman Team honors. After testing the NBA Draft waters and the transfer portal, he chose to return to Washington State for his sophomore season — a decision that would prove pivotal.
In 2022–23, Gueye emerged as the centerpiece of the Cougars’ offense. Playing out of position at center, he embraced the challenge, averaging 14.3 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game. His breakout moment came on February 2, 2023, when he dropped a career-high 31 points against USC. At season’s end, he was named First Team All-Pac-12.
The NBA came calling again, and this time, Gueye was ready. He declared for the 2023 NBA Draft and participated in the NBA Draft Combine. On draft night, he was selected 39th overall by the Charlotte Hornets, traded to the Boston Celtics, and ultimately landed with the Atlanta Hawks. On July 3, 2023, he signed his rookie contract.
Injuries hampered his rookie campaign — a lower back stress fracture sidelined him for much of the season — but Gueye remained determined. He rehabbed with the Hawks’ G League affiliate, the College Park Skyhawks, showing flashes of the promise that brought him to the league. On April 11, 2025, he delivered a statement performance: 18 rebounds and 10 points in a win over the Philadelphia 76ers — his best NBA outing to date.
Beyond the stats and accolades, those who know Mouhamed Gueye speak of something greater — his character. Whether it was his humility at Prolific Prep, his loyalty to the Nations family, or his resilience in college and the pros, Gueye carries himself with kindness, gratitude, and grace.
To watch Mouhamed Gueye’s Full Court Dream unfold is to witness more than a basketball journey — it’s the story of a young man whose love for his family, commitment to education, and belief in himself transformed his life. From the streets of Dakar to the arenas of the NBA, Mouhamed is proof that the game of basketball can open doors, create family, and build futures.
And for those of us lucky enough to have crossed paths with him, one thing is certain: this is just the beginning.
