From playing barefoot on makeshift hoops in Nigeria to suiting up for the Philadelphia 76ers, Adem Bona is the embodiment of the Full Court Dream.
Born Ikechukwu Stanley Okoro on March 28, 2003, in Lagos, Nigeria, Adem is the youngest of five children. As a boy, he honed his footwork not on the hardwood but on the soccer field. But his towering height soon nudged him toward a different destiny. With no proper court and sometimes no ball, young Adem still found a way to play, crafting games with whatever was available — a drive, a dream, and a belief that basketball could change his life.
His life changed dramatically when a short video clip of him caught the eye of Turkish coach Türkay Çakıroğlu. That connection brought him to Istanbul at just 13 years old, where he left behind his family and his homeland to chase a dream most wouldn’t dare imagine. From Istanbul Basket to Pınar Karşıyaka, Bona’s rise through the Turkish basketball ranks was meteoric.
But his next leap would be even bigger.
In September 2020, Adem landed in Napa, California, to join Prolific Prep, one of the premier high school basketball academies in the U.S. Under head coaches Mark Phelps and later Billy McKnight, Bona became a force on both ends of the floor. In his senior season, he helped Prolific Prep stun Sunrise Christian with a last-second win at the GEICO Nationals, before falling to eventual runner-up Link Academy. That tournament, and his two years at Prolific, proved that Adem Bona was a five-star talent with a limitless ceiling.
When it came time to choose a college, the final decision came down to two blue-bloods: UCLA and Kentucky. He chose the Bruins, and Westwood would never forget him.
As a freshman, he was raw but explosive — earning Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and All-Defensive Team honors. Injuries, including a torn labrum in his shoulder, tested his resilience. But resilience is what Adem is made of. After recovering and adding midrange touch and post moves to his arsenal, he returned for his sophomore season better than ever.
In 2023–24, he averaged 12.4 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game, earning First Team All-Pac-12 and Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year honors. His energy, his motor, and his humility made him a fan favorite in Westwood and a leader in the locker room.
After two seasons at UCLA and 115 career blocks — 6th all-time in Bruins history — Adem declared for the 2024 NBA Draft. On July 21, 2024, his Full Court Dream took another leap when the Philadelphia 76ers selected him with the 41st overall pick in the second round.
He made his NBA debut on October 23, 2024, against the Milwaukee Bucks and notched a career-high 28 points against that same team on April 3, 2025. While he’s split time between the Sixers and their G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats, the experience has only fueled his growth. His relentless work ethic, infectious spirit, and boundless energy continue to shine.
And the story just keeps getting better.
This summer, Adem will play in the 2025 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, where he’ll be reunited with one of his closest friends, Stef Todorovic, a Serbian sharpshooter and former Prolific Prep teammate. Stef just wrapped his college career at Pepperdine and signed with the 76ers’ summer squad. Their reunion is the kind of full-circle moment that makes this game beautiful. “Yeahhh it’s going to be so much fun,” Bona said. “From Prolific Prep to the NBA!”
Watching Adem go from the backcourts of Lagos to the bright lights of the NBA has been a joy for everyone who’s crossed paths with him — including us here at Full Court Dream. As someone who had the privilege of photographing him during his Prolific Prep and Grind Session days, I can say without hesitation: Adem Bona is as real as they come. A kind, joyful soul who lights up a gym — not just with dunks and blocks, but with his smile, his spirit, and his love of the game.
His journey — from Nigeria to Turkey to California to the NBA — is the definition of what it means to live your Full Court Dream.
And this is just the beginning.
