WNBA Weekly Recap: August 4–10, 2025
By Full Court Dream Staff
The week of August 4–10 was a whirlwind in the WNBA, filled with blockbuster trades, milestone moments, and shifting playoff dynamics. With the trade deadline looming, several teams made bold moves to strengthen their rosters for the stretch run. Injuries to key stars created opportunities for others to step up, while A’ja Wilson cemented her place in league history.
Blockbuster Trades Shake the League
The biggest headline came on Thursday, August 7, when the Connecticut Sun acquired former UConn star Aaliyah Edwards from the Washington Mystics. Edwards’ arrival reunites her with the Connecticut fan base, while Jacy Sheldon heads to the Mystics — her third team in just 16 months.
The Seattle Storm also made noise, landing All-Star guard Brittney Sykes from Washington in exchange for Alysha Clark, Zia Cooke, and a 2026 first-round pick. Seattle is clearly pushing to boost its perimeter defense and scoring punch heading into the playoffs.
Elsewhere, the Indiana Fever signed forward Alissa Pili to a seven-day contract and are hopeful for the return of rookie sensation Caitlin Clark, who has been sidelined with a groin injury.
Injury Watch
The injury list remains a concern for contenders:
- Angel Reese (Chicago Sky) is out indefinitely with a back injury.
- Breanna Stewart (New York Liberty) is sidelined with a knee injury.
- Napheesa Collier (Minnesota Lynx) missed the August 5 game against Seattle with a right ankle injury.
Milestones & Records
- A’ja Wilson (Las Vegas Aces) recorded her 500th career block, becoming the 10th player in WNBA history to reach the milestone.
- Nneka Ogwumike (Seattle Storm) moved into 7th all-time with her 140th career game scoring 20+ points.
- Gabby Williams (Storm) set a new single-season steals record for Seattle with 77.
- Paige Bueckers (Dallas Wings) tied Ruthie Bolton for the 4th-most consecutive double-digit scoring games to start a career (25).
Game Highlights
- Sabrina Ionescu exploded for 36 points to lead the Liberty over the Sun (87–78), snapping New York’s 4-game skid.
- The Atlanta Dream extended their win streak to four games, including an 86–65 rout over the Sky.
- Courtney Williams scored 14 of her 20 points in the second half as the Lynx edged the Storm 91–87.
