Bill Self Undergoes Heart Procedure

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas Jayhawks head coach Bill Self, 62, was hospitalized on Thursday, July 24, 2025, after experiencing what the university described as “concerning symptoms,” later undergoing a heart procedure during which two stents were inserted to address blocked arteries.

Self had directed the team’s final summer-practice session earlier that day before being escorted to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, where the procedure was completed successfully. The Kansas Athletics department reported that “the procedure went very well,”, and that Self is in good spirits, expected to make a full recovery, and anticipated to be discharged soon.

This marks a second cardiac episode for the Kansas legend; in March 2023, Self missed both the Big 12 Tournament and NCAA Tournament after undergoing a heart catheterization and receiving two stents following chest tightness and balance concerns. At that time, longtime assistant coach Norm Roberts filled in before his retirement; former KU guard and NBA coach Jacque Vaughn now plays a leading role on the staff.

A Legacy of Excellence Amid Health Challenges

Bill Self has been at the helm of Kansas men’s basketball since 2003, compiling a program-record 609–156 overall record over 22 seasons as of this summer. He has led the Jayhawks to two NCAA Championships (in 2008 and 2022), 16 Big 12 regular-season titles, and at least eight conference tournament titles. Self’s contributions were recognized with induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2017.

Despite his recent health scare, Self has firmly stated that retirement is not on the horizon—a sentiment he has reiterated repeatedly in recent months.

What It Means Moving Forward

  • Health monitoring and stability have become priorities for Self and the coaching staff following these two medical events.
  • The team and fans alike are hopeful for Self’s swift return to full engagement with the program as Kansas gears up for its 23rd season under his leadership.
  • With media and fans already buzzing about offseason roster changes, Self’s focus remains on assembling a team that fits his high‑tempo, athletic style of play—a philosophy he reaffirmed earlier this summer in offseason comments.

Full Court Dream joins the entire Jayhawk nation in wishing Coach Self a full and speedy recovery and looks forward to updates as they become available.
